Our Approach

#389 Using whole class arithmetic interventions – The Beeches Primary School

Richard Pitt

What did we do?

There are three classes in the mixed 3 and 4 year group.

One class used the Third Space Learning materials for Fluent in 5 to practice daily fluency tasks. This time was in addition to daily maths lessons. The intervention was a 36 week programme designed to build procedural fluency and help pupils choose the most efficient method when tackling arithmetic questions.

The additional two classes began the programme in the second term in order to provide a comparison in results.

Summary of impact

The project had a positive outcome, in both the children’s confidence with arithmetic problems, and the end of year assessment results, in which the cohort reached their target of 65% achieving expected levels or higher.

Steps taken

Year 3/4 staff used Third Space Learning materials for Fluent in Five as a daily intervention, for an additional 15 minutes a day, in addition to the regular maths lessons.

The intervention provides a mix of 5 different arithmetic problems to be explored and discussed each day.

We started the delivery of the programme after the initial round of baseline tests in September. The intervention was introduced into one class. There was another round of whole school testing in December.

The strategic maths lead, year 3 and 4 maths lead and assessment lead then compared the data across the year group.

The intervention was then introduced to the other year 3 and 4 classes in January, and ran until the end of the year. A final round of testing was completed in June.

What would we do differently

Some of the resources provided had questions based on skills/strategies that had not yet been covered through regular maths lessons. In future, it would be more beneficial to ensure that the content matched what had been covered so far.

Cost

The cost of a years subscription was £780 and included 326 weeks worth of targeted lesson plans and resources to deliver the scheme. Costs towards additional release £1220.
