#802 Summer Schools (Transition Year 6-7)

Emma van Deventer, Norwich Opportunity Area Transition Project Manager

What did we do?

Many Year 6 students had their learning disrupted over the 2020 Summer Term. This included disruption to the usual transition planning and activities before they moved to Year 7 in a new school. Schools told us that some students had poor well-being and were anxious about moving schools. The Norwich Opportunity Area team offered funding for summer school activities in 2020, to be designed and delivered by secondary schools. This could be used to support students of all ages but most secondary schools chose to focus on the Y6-7 transition year and activities designed to support these students in their move to secondary school. Some schools set up longer provision that took place throughout the summer holidays and some chose to use external providers rather than or as well as school staff.

Successful examples of summer school provision can be used to inform the type of summer activities that are delivered in future years, particularly to support students with transition into secondary school. Summer support is one part of the Education Recovery plans that central government has shared.

Summary of impact

Summer school activities for Year 6 students moving into Year 7 were valuable to help new students settle into learning in September, particularly in response to Covid-19 disruption. Student participation in activities over the summer holidays was strong. Anecdotally, schools fed back that students who attended summer school activities settled in during the Autumn Term far better than those who did not.

Steps taken

The Norwich Opportunity Area team set up a grant funding process and asked schools to submit a plan for activities they could run over the summer holidays. Schools designed the programme and recruited students to participate. Most activities took place at the end of August 2020 and were delivered by school staff for 1 or 2 weeks in duration. Some schools set up longer provision that took place throughout the summer holidays and some chose to use external providers rather than or as well as school staff.

What would we do differently

Clear and regular communication with parents was essential for successful engagement with students, especially over the summer holidays. A free lunch as part of sessions was always popular. The use of different and varied approaches was key, some students who didn’t engage with school sessions did participate well in sessions with external providers and vice versa. Having a mixture of activities and support that provides students the opportunity to get to know their new school environment and feel prepared for learning in September achieves the best outcomes.

Cost

Provision and activities varied, average cost per pupil was £70-£80.

Common Transfer Document (Improving Transition info sharing at Year 6-7)

Primary and secondary schools have different approaches to sharing information about Year 6 students moving up to year 7 and this information can be used in different ways.

Admission Event for Parents (Transition Year 6-7)

A survey of Norwich Opportunity Area primary school parents found that 23% did not feel they had enough information about local secondary schools before they had to apply to them.

Primary/Secondary Interschool Visits (Year 6-7 Transition)

Every Norwich Opportunity Area (NOA) secondary school was asked to arrange a day to invite primary school teachers into their school and observe Y7 lessons. The lessons had to include maths and English and at least one other subject.

Primary School Parent Information Evenings (Year 6-7 Transition)

An information evening event for Y6 parents around the time secondary schools are allocated. These events were a chance to discuss the concerns parents have, as well as set realistic expectations for them on the secondary school experience.
