Our Approach

#508 Virtual Tour – Magdalen Gates Primary

Will Turnpenny, Assistant Head Teacher, Magdalen Gates Primary School

What did we do?

Our school is well known from the outside for our distinctive pencil railings. Looking through those railings, visitors can see our beautiful playground full of an astonishing variety of plants and trees as well as lots of fantastic playground equipment. The building itself is Victorian, but viewing it just from the outside gives no hint as to the large, airy vibrant environment that lies within. It’s an unusual school environment, and one which often draws visitors and prospective parents in. In the grip of lockdown, we knew that our inability to open the school up would have an impact not just on prospective parents, but also on their children – we place a very high priority on giving new starters lots of opportunities to come in and feel at home. When we were offered to have an extremely whizzy high-tech 3D online tour made, we jumped at the chance!

A team came in and worked with us to take high resolution 3 dimensional images and record videos with our Head and Reception teachers. We placed these on the front page of our website and were very pleased to be able to show our environment off to everyone. Subsequently our school tour was one of those with the highest levels of views across the project.

Summary of impact

New parents still say to us how much they enjoy looking around the environment online (it helps that the technology has such a wow factor!) and it has been something that has supported those children with higher levels of anxiety or additional need.

Following the uploading of the tour, we have had full cohorts in Reception.

Steps taken

The project was mainly in the hands of the video professionals at Insight UK. We had to set up the classrooms to look as we wanted them to and keep them clear of people (since this was during lockdown, that wasn’t too challenging!). We also had to think of questions and answers for our video interview segments and come in ready to face the camera!

What would we do differently

Nothing was identified that we would do differently.

Cost

Since the project was funded through the NOA, the key cost was staff time, especially in getting the classroom set up to reflect the way it would ordinarily be at the start of September.

Virtual Tour - Mile Cross Primary School

When we were offered the chance to film a virtual tour of reception, this was an amazing opportunity to share our school with new children and parents in a safe way. We organised this for our nursery children too.

Virtual Tour - Norwich Primary Academy

We were lucky to be chosen to have a virtual tour to support transition into our new reception cohort in September 2020 after lockdown number 1. We worked with Insight UK who produced the virtual tour for us.
