The three Eastern Opportunity Areas are Ipswich, Norwich and Fenland & East Cambridgeshire.

Eastern Opportunity Areas and Big Ideas

Being an Opportunity Area has enabled these places to try some “Big Ideas” - large scale projects investing in our early years settings, our schools and colleges, and our community partners with new approaches to key priorities. You’ll find these big ideas on this site, along with the case studies, resources and connections you need to understand the impact they had, and how they can be used elsewhere.

However, being an Opportunity Area is more than just those big ideas; in each of the areas we are a vibrant, connected community of leaders, education practitioners and community partners that are passionate about improving the life chances of every child and young person.

Ipswich Opportunity Area plus-icon minus-icon

Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and East Anglia’s waterfront town. A powerhouse of culture, it has a higher number of regularly
funded Arts Council partners than anywhere outside of London. Despite the strengths of the area and recent investment, Ipswich has struggled economically in recent years, and levels of deprivation within the town are relatively high in some areas. Our vision is for all young people in Ipswich to be happy, confident, ambitious and flexible lifelong learners. Fenland & East Cambridgeshire Opportunity Area plus-icon minus-icon

Fenland and East Cambridgeshire has long been recognised globally for its contribution to agriculture, renewable energy and engineering. However rurality and pockets of deprivation can sometimes hold children and young people back from opportunities to reach their potential. Our ambition to improve social mobility depends on ensuring that all children and young people in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire have access to high quality education, training and employment, regardless of ability, background or where they live and go to school. Norwich Opportunity Area plus-icon minus-icon

Norwich is a great city that blends the modern and the historic. It is an inspiring place to grow up and the people of Norwich are proud of their city. It was England’s first UNESCO City of Literature. However, despite its culture, history and association with literature, Norwich ranked 323rd out of 324 districts in the 2016 Social Mobility Index. The vision of the Norwich Opportunity Area partners has been to create a system where no child in Norwich is left behind.
